Creating erdalbora.com and Migrating Content from Previous Site

by | Dec 25, 2016 | Blog Post

I have been working for the last couple of weeks to create a self hosted, multilingual WordPress based personal website. I have been setting up the software and moving the content from my previous site erdalbora.wordpress.com which I will be gradually phasing out.

I am learning how to setup WordPress, and using Bitnami WordPress Multisite for easy setup, Divi Builder for easier building, Cobian Backup 11 Gravity and Google Drive for backup. A friend directed me to Bitnami and gave me the idea to use plugin/theme builders and this sped up my work and made it much more streamlined and sustainable. I passed some acquired experience to him after a few weeks so his work will be improved, too.

It is fun to decipher these technologies, and there is the fact that I had been away from technical stuff for a good while. I am warming up, and creating the site that I desire, meant to be developed and evolved for long years to come with the intention to serve our growth in the best way.

I chose self hosting to reduce running costs and have significantly more control in what I am doing with the site or multiple sites. It was a challenge at first, and I had some doubts if I would be able to pull it off. I stumbled on some problems that took many hours to solve especially when I was installing Bitnami WordPress Multisite. It is a really simple and great deployment application, but there are some pitfalls that inexperienced website developers can fall into with WordPress deployment and I fell into these. Some misleading comments online also took some of my time, but in the end, I persevered, worked on it methodically with a clear head and the problems were solved one by one. If this was a level 10 task, I felt I leveled up to level 10 from level 1 in this area over the course of many days.. my engineering background and computer skills started awakening and helped a great deal of course.

I expect to be working on the site design and the moving operation in a steady pace over the next weeks and months, and I see this as a new creation getting shaped through steady work while I am working also on becoming more heart centered, more aware, more awake in my life. To make the content more complete, I also intend to translate some posts in Turkish to English and some posts in English to Turkish and publish them in the corresponding sites under erdalbora.com

Note on some technical details:

I am using Cobian Backup 11 Gravity and Google Drive (which offers 15 GB free space) for automated backup operations, first I create a local temp backup with Cobian and then make it create an archive of this to Google Drive directory and Google Drive automatically synchronizes this with the remote directory. This frees my mind from worrying about losing all my work in case of catastrophic hardware failure.
